Lake Fountain & Pond Aerators

At A & B Aquatics, we are knowledgeable in many types of lake fountains and which to choose for your needs. Knowing the benefits of fountains and aerators is important so that you way know if you need them or not.

Pond installation has been an extremely common practice in landscape design these past few years. Having one installed on the property creates a beautiful setting that offers recreation, relaxes the body and soul, and make a helpful habitat for wildlife while you enjoy your landscape. As beautiful as your pond can be, the maintenance needed can be extensive. Properly aerating it is among the easiest and cost-effective ways to maintain the beauty and health of your investment.

A properly designed aeration system will work wonders for the pond, even in lakes. Both aeration and circulation are equally important ways to improve the water quality of the pond, particularly dissolved oxygen levels. The majority of nuisance aquatic vegetation thrives in stagnant water with low dissolved oxygen level. With the help of proper design and installation, as well as usage of aeration systems, these problems will be remedied.

Benefits of Aerators

Pond aerators are specifically designed to recirculate the pond water, which helps increase that amount of suspended oxygen in the water. Such action will ensure that aquatic animals and plants living in the pond would have enough access to oxygen, thus preventing the pond water to be stratified. The term Stratified (Stratification) means that the bulk of the pond’s oxygen and heat remains near the surface of the water.

There are various kinds of aerators that can be used to prevent stratification. This includes paddle wheels, diffusers, vertical pumps, and pump sprayers. Paddles wheels stir the water with the use of a large paddle wheel. The diffusers pump and diffuse air to the bottom of the pond. On the other hand, the vertical pump and pump sprayers use submerged water pumps to draw water from the pond and spray it over to the pond’s surface.

Benefits of Fountains

The aesthetic appeal of a pond is greatly improved with fountains, and it also recirculates water near the surface of the pond. Fountains can also help improve the quality of water in ponds that are relatively shallow (e.g.4’-6’ deep), as well as to add oxygen the water. It is done by pulling water from the first 1-2 feet of the water and propelling into the air. The process makes use of air-water contact to transfer oxygen. As the water is being propelled into the air, it breaks into small droplets. These droplets collect oxygen while still in the air. As they return to the body of water, they mix with the rest of the water, therefore transferring the oxygen back to the ecosystem. When it comes to fountains, choosing the right system is very important and should depend on several factors such as the visual effect desired, the available power, and the amount of aquatic vegetation.

Pond Care

For ponds that are over 8 feet deep, the upper 4-6 feet of water heats more quickly compared to the water near the bottom of the pond. This difference in temperature between the pond’s top and bottom leads to the layers of water with several densities that do not mix. The oxygen in the water with lowest layer gets depleted through time, thus killing all plants that grow near the bottom and even cause them to rot. When the temperature decreases or in case a storm mixes with both the upper and lower layers of water, a turnover takes place. This turnover forces the rotting plant matter going to the surface, in which it depletes the oxygen level in the pond. Rapid turnover will kill plants and fishes in a pond.

Considerations

Ponds having a larger surface area or irregular shape often need more than one aerator in order to properly recirculate oxygen and water in the entire pond. The best time of the year to provide aeration for the pond is during summer season as this is the time water surface is rapidly heated during the day.

The oxygenation and movement of water in an aquatic ecosystem is greatly important because these processes are capable of limiting the growth of algae, while helping sustain fish and other types of aquatic animals. Moreover, this increase in the health and quantity of fish, as well as the decrease in algae results in improved water clarity, less organic residue, reduced attraction of waterfowl, and reduced odor.
